We typically don't have very many special events or menus in the Summer, but we do go to our Farmers Market every Saturday morning to pick up a few things they're featuring.  We encourage you to do the same in your community and certainly, if you're visiting Calistoga, come by from 8:30 to noon, just a block from All Seasons on the corner of Wash;ington and First Street, next to the Community Center.  There's always music, some good local coffee and pastries, fresh flowers, unique nursery selections, beautiful fish, specialty foods, jams, teas and bountiful produce.  Stonefruit is wonderful, plus all the earlier summer garden crops.

The Napa County Fair takes places in Calistoga as well.  Centered always around the 4th of July, this year it's from the 1st through the 4th.  It's surprisingly un-gentrfied, considering Napa Valley's fairly gussied up reputation, but all the better for that.  We know you can win a teddy bear--my husband did that one year--and possibly a kewpie doll still waits her new owner at one of the stalls.

Whatever you do, have a safe and happy 4th of July weekend.  And don't forget that other excuse to enjoy yourself, Bastille Day, on the 14th of July!  Ya gotta love whoever created the pomme frite...

"No Drugs Down the Drain!" Campaign

We're very proud to be involved in our local drive to keep unwanted and unused pharmaceuticals and pet medications out of our landfills and waterways.  "NoDrugsDowntheDrain.org" advises communities on how they can offer a safe, easy and free method to properly dispose of these hazards to our water supply and marine life.  Twice yearly, Soroptimists International of Calistoga, a service organization, teams up with the Calistoga Police Department and our local St. Helena Hospital, to offer curbside drop-off of all unwanted and expired medications, as well as pet medications and syringes ("sharps").

At our first drive in April of this year, we collected over 160 pounds of medications and sharps, followed by more than 180 pounds of waste in October. Imagine the impact if every community in the United States did the same thing.  It's estimated that last year, approximately 150 million pounds of medical waste ended up in landfills across the country...

To find out about a collection event in your area--or to organize one--contact your county's Department of Environmental Health, a local hospital, or even your pharmacy.   If we want to continue to enjoy the ocean's bounty on our plates, it only makes sense to do these truly simple things to safeguard our waterways.
